Couple that with the fact most other local major chain retailers are paying more for less work and you can see how Dollar Gerneral's constant desire for expansion is essentially throwing their workers under the bus with very little incentive for the current employees to perform. You have to pretty much live there in order to succeed at being a store manager. Have fun dealing with poorly managed deliveries when your store is understaffed. Cons Low competitive wages, no growth, overworked. Cons Dont get paid what you need to live. Most recieving rooms are very impacted to the point of helplessness on the staffs part. You are always working on suck. Very fast pace and must be able to multitask. You will not have enough hours given to you for your employees so in turn you will have to work it. Short staffed always.
Might not like area but it's cool, pays OK but can make it up by general over other employees shifts if they are indeed willing to miss hours for you to make extra money. And it really depends on what store you apply at, because not all managers and coworkers dollar be great like mine were. Have fun working by yourself for hours on end. The work was plentiful with the pay I still needed a second job. I would only suggest this job to someone who was desperate and needed a job quick.

Store managers are needed to be in the stores from 8am until at least 6pm to make payroll without help with only 1 real day off, if no one calls in sick. Management judges workers very quickly before trying to get to know you. Stores are purposely kept understaffed by weekly corporate-mandated scheduling practices usually in the form of unsubstantiated hour allowances which forces workers of all levels to perform the work of three ranging from cashier, stocking, cleaning and money auditing on a single shift while trying to uphold the company's draconian and overall impractical weekly workflow.

Cons Everything. Dont be a manager if you cant balance easily, especially if you have a family. Store managers are held back due to payroll problems like over scheduling part time help.
Pros None. Dollar general was the worst place to work for. But it being retail it does drain your energy and emotion. I used to love coming to work but the bad customers took a toll on me and made me hate coming to work.
Coworkers and manager were amazing to work with we were all a team. Cons Pay less. Dollar General is perhaps one of the most illogical companies I have the misfortune to work under.
