Missiles can usually hit monsters even if the monster is in the middle of a group of your men, so focus fire on it. You don't HAVE to know how well it will do vs every other unit necessarily, just know what your units bring. Kind of a fine point but you'll pick it up over time.
Great Weapons always gives armor piercing to that unit as well but often they attack slower. These are very important for getting flanking maneuvers set up. There are some good training videos out there I'll try to come back with a decent one. Swords are good against most other infantry, but not monsters chariots, cav or other such large units.
